Life Insurance News: Discounted life insurance for vegetarians

Article Published: 01-Aug-2007

A discount of six per cent will be offered to vegetarians and fish-eaters who take out life insurance with Animal Friends Insurance, the not for profit insurer has announced.

According to AFI there are over three million Britons who are currently a vegetarian or are likely to become one in the next year and given that medical evidence would suggest that, as a group, they are likely to suffer less major illnesses, including some cancers, than meat eaters, it is requesting that other life insurance providers follow suit.

The insurer has stated that vegetarians have not had their premiums reduced any despite the fact they are less likely to suffer from a range of chronic diseases until now and claims vegetarians are ‘subsidising’ meat eaters.

Elaine Fairfax, the managing director, says, “The risk of vegetarians suffering from some cancers is reduced by up to 40 per cent and from heart disease by up to 30 per cent, but despite this, they have to pay the same life insurance premiums as meat eaters. We believe this is unfair and the life insurance industry needs to acknowledge the fact that being a vegetarian can have a very positive impact on life expectancy and reduce premiums accordingly.”
